Disarmament Education Highlights

The second Advancing Disarmament in a New Age of Insecurity workshop was held in Vienna, Austria on September 21 and 22, 2026. The event brough together scholars and activists from many countries to discuss the growing dangers of militarization and increased risk of nuclear weapons use and explore ways to promote active disarmament and strategies for peace as a response. It focused on the role of higher education institutions in advancing disarmament education and exploring effective ways to advocate for change.
On September 23, 2026, Dr. Megan MacKenzie, Professor and Simons Chair in Peace, Disarmament and Human Security at the School for International Studies, Simon Fraser University, spoke at the "Networks for Change: Disarmament Education in Practice" edition of the Vienna Conversation Series convened by the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) in Vienna.
We are pleased to share information on this two-year independent writing fellowship focusing on global nuclear disarmament education being offered by The Institute of Current World Affairs. Letters of interest are due by April 30, 2026.
Research report authored by Phone Min Thant and supervised by Dr. Megan Mackenzie, Simons Chair in International Law and Human Security at the School for International Studies, Simon Fraser University.
This workshop brought together scholars and activists from around the world to address the growing dangers of nuclear escalation and make the case for active disarmament as a response—not through increased militarization, but by building arguments and strategies for peace. It focused on the role of higher education institutions in advancing disarmament education and exploring effective ways to advocate for change.
