Will to Intervene (W2I) Project Update, August 2011
W2I Project Update, August 2011
On behalf of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) at Concordia University, we are pleased to share with you an update on the Will to Intervene (W2I) Project.
• Kyle Matthews, W2I Lead Researcher, participated in an international security training seminar for journalists organized by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, The Stanley Foundation, and the Gerda Henkel Stiftung in London, United Kingdom. Kyle spoke on a panel on genocide and atrocities prevention alongside Oxford University Professor Jennifer Welsh. Over 20 journalists attended the seminar, including representatives from ABC News, the Philadelphia Enquirer, Mother Jones, the LA Times, Congressional Quarterly, Russia Today, the Miami Herald, Foreign Policy Magazine, the Toronto Star, and Sky Italia.
• While in the UK, Kyle met with the Chair of the British All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity, The Honourable Michael McCann, to discuss establishing formal links between the British and Canadian All-Party Parliamentary Groups. Kyle also shared several copies of the W2I book with Mr McCann, and briefed him on MIGS’ future plans to conduct a national study in the UK.
• Kyle was interviewed by Le Devoir on Thursday 16 June about the escalating conflict between North and South Sudan. W2I staff remain available for media commentaries on the unfolding humanitarian crises in North Africa and the Middle East.
• The W2I book was reviewed in the Winter 2011 Canadian Naval Review (Vol.6, No. 4).
• The Aurea Foundation ,Concordia University and UNESCO have kindly awarded MIGS supporting grants to organize a major conference in Montreal on the 20 – 21 October 2011 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Responsibility to Protect. The conference, which will be titled “The Promise of the Media in Halting Mass Atrocities”, will bring together leading journalists, social media experts and politicians. We would welcome your suggestions for potential participants if you know of someone who would be a good fit.
• The W2I Project has bolstered its team with the addition of a number of interns. Currently there are 7 interns working on the W2I Project: Daniela Porat, Laurie Drake, Heather Hamilton, Alexandra Buskie, Clara Merveille, Randy Pinsky, and David Mercadante.
The W2I Project continues to make progress in educating policy-makers on what national governments can do to operationalize the Responsibility to Protect principles by building domestic capacity to better prevent and interdict mass atrocity crimes. We welcome inquiries about partnerships and collaborations which would add to our work, and as always, are eager to present our work to interested parties, both inside and outside of government. Please visit our website http://migs/W2I/home.htm for more details on our work. You can also follow us on twitter (@W2IProject and @MIGSInstitute), Facebook (MIGS), and Youtube (W2Iproject).
